UGGs are comfortable sheepskin shoes that never go out of style. Their popularity periodically rises and falls, but over many years, these soft boots have managed to become a classic.
The authors of Fashion Illiteracy have prepared several fashion tips on how and what to wear women’s UGGs with in the 2025/2026 season and have also decided to share some interesting facts related to them.
Origin, Features, and the Official Brand
Before we move on to tips for creating outfits, we’ve gathered a few facts from history that will help you learn more interesting things about UGGs.
Natural Sheepskin
Original UGGs are made from sheep’s wool, with no additional coatings. Their design features the fleece on the inside. Only the sole is made of rubber or synthetics.
Due to the natural properties of sheepskin, the shoes are very warm. They can be worn comfortably even in severe frosts. There are synthetic versions that are more affordable, but their quality in cold weather is far inferior to the natural ones.
Rural Footwear
According to one version, UGGs were invented in New Zealand or Australia. Exactly where is unknown. In the early 20th century, they were worn mainly by rural residents and farmers. The northern peoples have a similar version called unty (boots).
Surfing, Swimming, and Skiing

Over time, UGGs found use not only in agriculture but also in sports. In addition to skiers, they began to be worn by surfers and swimmers to warm up their feet after a session in the water.
Moreover, the models familiar to everyone today were invented by a surfer named Shane Stedman. In 1971, he registered the brand “UGH-BOOTS” in Australia, and later just “UGH”.
The UGG Trademark

UGGs are often used to refer to the entire category of this type of footwear, regardless of the manufacturer. There are often disputes and lawsuits on this topic. However, “UGG” is an official registered brand owned by the Deckers Outdoor Corporation.
The brand was initially registered by Brian Smith. He was also a surfer from Australia who brought UGGs to the USA. However, in 1995, the aforementioned Deckers corporation bought the company from Smith for $15 million. The following year, the rights were also bought from Stedman, the owner of “UGH,” as well as a future supply of three pairs of UGGs annually.
Popularization in Fashion
According to some sources, UGGs began to be worn as a fashion item, and not just as practical footwear, around the 1980s. However, their true popularity began in the 2000s and lasted until the mid-2010s, reinforced by the looks of many celebrities.
Disputes Surrounding the Brand
As mentioned, many believe that UGGs are not the property of a specific company, but a traditional design and name. Australian manufacturers even tried to cancel the brand registration in the country to sell their own versions. And in many countries, counterfeit models are produced, which the corporation that owns the brand is trying to combat.
How and What to Wear UGGs with in the New Season
In the 2020s, UGGs have once again become part of the everyday women’s wardrobe, so it’s appropriate to use them in modern outfits. We have evaluated current trends and compiled a few relevant recommendations.
Short Models with High Socks

One of the current options is the combination of short models like the Classic Ultra Mini with high white socks or leg warmers.
On a Platform

Given the trend for oversized clothing and the popularity of more massive footwear, models on a thick platform will look appropriate. For some reasons, they might also be more comfortable.
With Jeans

A classic option is to wear them with jeans. However, if in the early 2010s this meant tucked-in skinny jeans, it’s now better to choose wide jeans with a slight flare that sit over the shoes.
With Leggings

If you want a more form-fitting look, leggings are a better choice than jeans. You can add layering with the high socks already mentioned.
With Skirts and Dresses

UGGs are suitable not only for cold weather but also as transitional footwear. They can definitely be paired with various dresses, skirts, and even short shorts. In modern looks, experimentation is welcome.
With Sweatpants

A tracksuit can be a comfortable addition. With the right combination of materials and colors, the outfit can look cozy and harmonious.
With Knitted Clothing

Knitted dresses, pants, or suits also go well with this type of footwear.
With Coats and Loose Shearling Jackets

Considering that UGGs are wool, it’s appropriate to pair them with a similar top. A good shearling coat with a matching texture can be an addition that will enhance the look and make it complete. You can also wear a classic coat.
Natural Colors
Despite the availability of a wide variety of shades, including bright ones, natural-looking classics are a foolproof choice. Black, brown, gray, but first and foremost – beige.
A reminder that we previously wrote about wide men’s pants.
